Hes a pleasant looking kid, but with a subtle air of detachment. The OTHER STUDENTS check him out. mIKES VOICE The first ones always being the new kid. mike humps his backpack and small, wheeled suitcase down a suburban front walk to a station wagon parked at the curb. Stenciled on the car door is: WISCONSIN DEPARTMENT OF CHILD WELFARE. mIKES VOICE The second ones packing light. The FOSTER PARENTS stand on the front porch of their home with glazed, shell-shocked expressions. Mike waves to them from the car. No hard feelings. mIKES VOICE My names Mike McClain. And ever since my parents were abducted by aliens two and a half years ago, Ive lived with 14 different families, at 14 different addresses in and around the greater Milwaukee area. 0002000005FC0000048C5F6,the 14 families are a mixed lot. Cutting across a broad spectrum of ethnicity, age, social status and family size. Each one blurring into the next. mIKES VOICE Most of those people were nice, well-meaning folks. But for one reason or another, things just didnt work out. some of the reasons: One set of frightened parents leans against a closet door as some kind of TENTACLED BEAST tries to force its way out. Mike stands by, holding a hanger. Another family contemplates the GIANT SMOLDERING CRATER where their house once stood. When they turn around to question the scorched and smoldering MIKE, he points at the heavens. Yet a third foster dad stares through his car windshield at the EARTH hanging in the night sky. Mike, in the passenger seat, offers him a road map. the bee circles the exotic plant Finally landing on the lip of its colorful bloom. mIKES VOICE I dont blame them for being upset. Or in my case, simply call the placement agency and tell them that theyre sorry, but things just arent working out. The SOCIAL WORKER from Child Welfare tsk tsks behind his desk. I know that sounds sad, but really, its not. After all, what is life, if not a series of Grand Adventures? Mike picks up the book hes reading. Its titled: THE RESTLESS TRIBE by Billy Smith. Turning the page to a COLORFUL ILLUSTRATION which suddenly COMES TO LIFE: A NATIVE AMERICAN VILLAGE GLOWS WITH FIRELIGHT In the shadow of a forested sandstone bluff. On the shore of a high country lake. aT THE CENTER OF THE VILLAGE-- A ceremony Feral men with painted faces gyrate around a towering bonfire. Accompanied by trancelike CHANTING and the primal beat of POUNDING DRUMS... which is visible outside beyond the open door of a wigwam... He makes a broad gesture, bringing the gathering to a HUSH. All eyes turn and look to the wigwam where-- A YOUNG MOTHER, a beautiful native girl in her early teens emerges, carrying the infant. Shes escorted by an equally young brave named MOONWATCHER. The couple lower their heads before the Shaman and present him their child. This is the tribes SPIRIT BLANKET. the shaman reaches into a pouch, and holds up- a tiny, intricately PAINTED gourd. Dangling it before the child, who grasps for it, fascinated. The Shaman takes a feather, begins brushing the little girls face, chest, arms and legs. CHANTING a prayer to the heavens. He lifts a ceremonial bowl filled with clean water. Stirs it with the feather. Then he submerges the tiny gourd, filling it, and stoppers it with a wooden plug. Tying a leather strip to the gourd, he then attaches it to the Spirit Blanket. Which upon closer scrutiny, is seen to be composed entirely of similar, uniquely painted gourds. He turns and presents the child to the entire tribe, seated around the bonfire. They ULULATE and CHEER. The proud parents weep. The baby claps for herself, drooling profusely. 000200000719000019A4713,from higher ground the tribal village is visible through the trees. The other SCOUTS sardined into the vehicle grimace and turn up the volume on their own personal HEADPHONES, plugged into their electronic devices of choice. the lincoln descends into a fertile valley of pine forests and craggy peaks, ringed by a ridge of sandstone bluffs. mike stares out his window. Admiring natures splendor. Something catches his eye UP AHEAD. a line OF STONES stretch out of the woods and ACROSS THE HIGHWAY. Past a dilapidated wooden sign that reads: SACRED ITTAWA INDIAN SPIRIT BORDER BADABUPP. Sacred once, now its a speedbump. a sandstone rock formation 40 feet high, with a huge alley-like fissure down the middle. Piles of building materials, both natural and manufactured, sit by the entrance. The truck rolls up. the boys spill out, six of them in all. Georges eldest foster son, 15 year old Chad surveys the area. 000200000501000020B74FB,cHAD I dont see any Indians. Big boned STU peers out of the truck before stepping down. Hes as rumpled as an unmade bed. And loud as a boombox. stu You never do. Until its too late. 64 Dexter swings a baseball bat like Paul Bunyon an ax. DEXTER I saw the Indians at Miller Park last summer. Brewers hammered em. BUTCH sneers at the overgrown jock. 13 years old, but already pierced and tattooed. Scouting must be part of his probation. buTCH (big fake laugh) HAHAHAHAHAAA-- idiot. The two boys exchange dirty looks. Mike is busy entering the troops current position on his HANDHELD GPS LOCATER. Jug-eared Gus, Georges youngest foster son, tugs on his sleeve. guS We gonna see Indians, Mike? mIKE Just one, Gus. Guy named Billy Smith. Hes gonna show us his ancestors village. chad What for? You seen one teepee, you seen em all. Mike They didn't have teepees out here, Chad. Those were the plains Indians. Forest Indians like the Ittawas had bark lodges or wigwams. CHAD (faking asphyxiation) Arrrgh! Microscope, stop! Your brain's using all the oxygen! The other boys laugh. Mike just smiles and shakes his head. Stu Why do you call him Microscope? Chad doesnt answer. The sound of a MOTOR approaching. geORGE Thats probably him now. 000200000411000025B240B,Stu Hey, I saw this Discovery Channel thing the other night-- When Bears Attack? And they showed this guy who surprised a bear in the woods? And the bear took one swipe at the guy-- And TORE HIS ENTIRE FACE OFF! And as the guy was crawling around trying to get his face back? The bear ATE IT! Now the guy just looks like two eyeballs pressed into an uncooked face-shaped meatloaf! So if we see any bears, Im outta here. Everyone just looks at him. Meanwhile, a battered pick up roars up and skids to a halt. A pair of large, mongrel dogs in the back. The driver hops out, offering her hand. billy smith Mr. Cooper? Im Billy Smith. Male mouths drop. BILLY SMITH is a babe. When youre a 13 year old boy, you start to notice these things... As do 38 year old men. George hides his left hand (the one with the wedding ring) behind his back. Offers his right. geORGE (big smile) Mr. Coopers my dads name. Mines George. And this is Troop 18 at your service. Dexter, Stu, Butch. And my sons, Chad, Gus... and Mike. 00020000079D000029BD797,the troop (as one) Hi..! cHAD Were his foster sons. George only took us in for the money the State pays when-- George smacks the teenager on the back of the head. Rolls his eyes at Billy. geORGE Hes at that rebellious stage. Billy looks them over. Nods toward the sandstone alleyway. bILLY SMITH Walk this way, please. The boys fall into step after her. Mimicking the sway of her hips. George sidles up beside Billy. gEORGE Hey, ever hear that joke? Lone Ranger and Tonto surrounded by savage redskins? Mike cringes. GEORGE Lone Ranger says we aint gonna get outta this one, old friend. And Tonto pulls out his tomahawk and says whatta ya mean we, paleface? HA! He punches her in the arm. Billy punches him back. gEORGE Ow. on the other side of the alleyway Whats left of the village isnt much more than a handful of charred and aged posts in the ground. Weeds everywhere. billy smith Well, here it is... ChAD Here what is? bILLY SMITH As many as 500 people once called this place home. The remains of their civilization are what we plan to excavate and restore. butch (cool!) Remains? You mean like... human remains? biLLY SMITH No. Oh no, no, no... No, the few survivors of the, uh, battle... buried the others some distance from here. gEORGE Really! And where would that be, exactly? bILLY SMITH Well, nobody knows. mIKE Thats the mystery, George. Thats what her books about. George No sh-- No kidding. Nothing like a good mystery, I always say. dEXTER There was a battle here? Mike There was a massacre here. All eyes turn to the new kid. Mike 134 years ago, the U.S. Army decimated the Ittawa Indian tribe on this very spot. 296 people. Slaughtered. the troop Whoaaaa... dEXTER Well, thats what you get for scalping pioneers. He takes another homerun cut with his bat. Mike No, thats what you get for living on land coveted by the United States Government in 1868. Chad Coveted? COVETED?? 00020000060E00003154608,He starts to COUGH and GASP. Stu laughs. Chad Microscope... As the others laugh, Stu mutters to Chad-- Stu So-- really-- Why do you call him Microscope? Chad glances at Mike, a bit unnerved. Billy starts passing out press-kits filled with historical information and COLOR ILLUSTRATIONS of an ambitious project. bILLY SMITH Okay. The museums concept is for a kind of historical theater in the round... with the restored village serving as the centerpiece for a circular History-Walk thatll take you past audiovisual exhibits detailing the indigenous tribal experience... finally leading into a Visitor Center complete with a food service area, a souvenir store, and a Native American handicrafts workshop. stu That sounds neat. He makes a face and pretends to vomit. Chad snorts. bILLY SMITH But before we can begin any serious work, we need the entire area cleared of weeds, deadwood and large rocks... George So... You got some sort of road crew-- chain gang kinda bunch-- coming in to do that? Billy smiles. breaking rocks in the hot sun Not to mention pulling weeds, sawing felled trees, digging up stumps and other forms of strenuous, back breaking labor. buTCH I thought this was supposed to be a camping trip. This is, like, what they make you do in juvie. cHAD Right. Like youve been to juvenile camp. buTCH Last year. cHAD Yeah, right. For what? buTCH Stealing cars. dEXTER Im sure. You cant even drive. buTCH Well, yeah. How do you think they caught me? The undersized Gus struggles by with an armload of kindling. 0002000007530000375C74D,gus Whatre you guys complaining about? Scouts are supposed to do good deeds. buTCH What planet are you from? Scouting is about getting out of all the crap our moms make us do if we stay home. sTU Really. MY dad took us to Hooters. CHAD And did YOUR dad let you take anything HOME from Hooters? Butch Whatre we supposed to take home from this? Lyme Disease? The SOUND of a MAP hastily folding turns their attention to: George Whatre you sposed to take home from this? (glares at Chad) A very... VALUABLE... experience. He flicks his MAP back over his face. Hes marking spots-- drawing arrows-- and circling certain geological features... Like the one hes circling now... Marked: BURIAL MOUND?? not far away Billy Smith and Mike examine a felled, termite infested totem. mIKE Are you really the last surviving member of your tribe? bILLY SMITH Im afraid so. mIKE Well, whats stopping you from having kids? Youre not getting any younger, you know. bILLY SMITH Excuse me??? mIKE In this day and age, you know theres no stigma attached to single parenthood-- bILLY SMITH Time out! Stop! I am not having this conversation with a 13 year old boy! Alright? Its just not happening. Mike shrugs and effortlessly shifts gears. Mike So do you live on a reservation now? BILLY sMITH Yeah. A big one. We call it... Chicago. But for the duration of the project Im staying in my great, great grandmothers cabin-- up there-- She points to the top of a distant peak. A homestead nestled in the treeline barely visible there. mIKE I thought the Army took away the Tribes land. BILLY SMITH They did. The government put some of it up for sale in 1959. Nana used her life savings to buy a tiny piece back so she could die on the land where she was born. Which she did. 27 years later. At the ripe old age of 117. Mike shakes his head at the irony. 0002000006D400003EA96CE,mIKE She mustve been quite a character. Ill bet she had stories. BILLY SMITH With illustrations, no less. MIKE I saw some. In your book. bILLY SMITH Would you like to see more? mIKE (grins) Can my little brother come too? mike and gus ride up the mountain in Billys truck. Mike pulls an apple out of his backpack. Polishes it. Stares out a window at the view. BillY SMITH Keeping the doctor away? Mike casts a wary glance toward the sky. Mike Among other things. He looks very serious. Billy lets it pass. bILLY SMITH I spent the summer up here when I was 6. Thats when Nana told me the story of the restless tribe. A tiny, handmade CABIN IN THE WOODS looms through her windshield. Mike admires the simple beauty of the place. Mike No wonder she wanted to die here. bILLY SMITH Her grave is in that stand of trees over there. The boys crane their necks, but see only trees. Billy pulls the truck to a stop. Gets out. mike and gus follow after her, still looking back toward the trees. Billys dogs leap from the truck and start sniffing the ground. bILLY SMITH She was there, you know. At the massacre. mIKE She couldnt have been very old then. bILLY SMITH She wasnt. She was just a baby. Mike Howd she manage to escape? BILLY sMITH Her mother, Blue Flower, fled with her to the other side of the Spirit Border. Meanwhile, her father, Moonwatcher, lead the cavalry away so theyd be safe. Mike What happened to Moonwatcher? bILLY SMITH He was never seen again. The two boys look impressed and saddened at the same time. guS Whats the Spirit Border? bILLY SMITH Cmon. Ill show you. a line of white stones like the ones crossing the highway, runs alongside the back of the cabin and disappears into the woods. 00020000039600004577390,bILLY SMITH My ancestors believed that all they needed of the earth was the land from the center of their village out for half a days walk. They marked it with a huge circle of stones so everyone would know where the world ended. And they called it the Spirit Border because they believed if they died outside their land, their spirits would be lost forever. Mike enters coordinates into his GPS. Gus lets the information sink in. gus So do you believe that stuff too? bILLY SMITH I believe they believed it. back at the village Much of the site has been cleared of rocks and weeds... cHAD I cant believe were working while Microscope and Gus get to go have milk and cookies with Pocohantas. sTU Okay... Seriously! WHY do you call him Microscope? Chad heaves a heavy sigh. The others stop working. cHAD Okay. When George first brought him home? He said his real parents were abducted by aliens. 0002000003E1000049073DB,The other boys find this incredibly amusing. chad The truth is they just abandoned him. Some campers found him like... wandering in the desert. Delirious. sTU Oh man! No wonder hes so screwed up! cHAD So hes constantly making things up, right? But sometimes... He does things... unexplainable things... creepy things... Stu Like what? cHAD Like... one time? He found all the socks I ever lost? Even the ones I lost in other houses? I mean, how weird is that? The others are awestruck. Except for Butch. buTCH Yeah, Chad. Sure he did. cHAD Im not kidding. And when I asked him how he did it, he said they were always there. All I had to do was look a little closer. So thats when I started calling him Microscope. mike stares at something with animalistic concentration. Billy stands behind him, taken by the kids focus. An enormous MURAL takes up an entire interior wall of the cabin. Its a depiction of the massacre, almost overwhelming in its detail. 00020000058600004CE2580,mIKE This paintings in the book. bILLY SMITH A lot of these are. Nana painted them after she moved back here. She worked on them every day, till she died. Dozens of PAINTINGS, all shapes and sizes, hang from every available space. Mikes eyes flit around. Taking in FLASH CUT DETAILS of the works: a blurry run through the woods-- a fissure in a high, burning bluff-- a terrified Indian face, reflected in water... guS Theyre creepy. mIKE So are massacres. guS Im gonna go play with the dogs. He runs outside. Mike turns his attention back to the main mural. Nods at something. mIKE Is that the Spirit Blanket? Billy squints at the painting: a colorful tapestry hangs from a wooden frame in the center of the burning village. The tribes Shaman lies dead in front of it. bILLY SMITH I think so. But well never really know, will we? Mike burns holes through the painting with his gaze. pulling back up to the WORK SITE in Billys truck. Gus jumps out and is about to run over to the others, when Mike holds him back. mIKE If Chad or anybody gives you a hard time about coming along, tell em I made you. Tell em I hypnotized you. Gus Like theyll believe that. Mike Chad will. Gus grins and runs off. Billy considers Mike... bILLY SMITH Its nice how you look after your little brother. mIKE Weve only been brothers a few weeks. Hes a good kid. I hope he turns out okay when Im gone. 0002000007420000526273C,bILLY SMITH Where are you going? mIKE Well, when the saucermen return, Im going to stow away on their UFO, knock them out one by one, and commandeer their spacecraft. Then Im going to interrogate their captain, using torture if I have to, till he tells me where my parents are being held captive. Then Ill fly the thing to their home planet, free my folks and redline it all the way back to Earth. I put my chances of success at about 3%. Anyway, thanks. Getting out of the truck. Billy stares after him. bILLY SMITH Mike. Mike looks back at her. Billy reaches for the ancient looking, handmade, Native American talisman dangling from her rear view mirror. Hands it to him. bILLY SMITH This is for you. Its a ring, maybe two and a half inches in diameter, wrapped in leather. A webbing of some sort has been woven in its center, adorned with a pair of beads. Feathers and beads hang from the bottom, attached by leather thongs. mIKE (admiring it) A Dream Catcher. bILLY SMITH You know what theyre for? mIKE They keep bad thoughts from entering your head when youre sleeping. bILLY SMITH It was Nanas. Her father made it for her when she was born. Mike tries to hand it back. mIKE I cant take this, Billy. It belongs in your family. Billy holds it clasped in Mikes hand. bILLY SMITH I cant have kids of my own, Mike. Some women just cant. And I am the last surviving member of my tribe. So tell me. Who else would appreciate it more? Their eyes meet. Mike looks down and nods. He runs from the truck. the others are calling it a day Most of the scouts loosely gathered around the smallish Gus by the Navigator. cHAD Cmon, losers. Put up or shut up. The athletic giant Dexter reaches for his wallet. deXTER Heck. I got five bucks. So does wild man Stu. sTU Yeah, Im in. Chad looks at Butch. The tough kid sneers back. 0002000003560000599E350,buTCH Easy come, easy go. The wallet he produces just happens to have GEORGES DRIVERS LICENSE in it. Butch forks over a five. All eyes turn to Gus. cHAD Its showtime, kid. Gus cracks his knuckles, clears his throat and focuses his gaze. The boys all turn and look at the two old dogs in the back of Billys pick up. Gus opens his mouth and SCREAMS at the top of his lungs. Without making a sound... The dogs ears prick up. BARKING furiously. The scouts are cracking up, slapping hands, piling into the Navigator. Chad hands Gus a five, keeping ten for himself. cHAD Youre the man, Gus. mike all alone in the remains of the village, takes a last look around. He reaches into his shirt and pulls out the Dream Catcher Billy gave him. It hangs from his neck by a thong. He holds the ring up for closer inspection. LOOKS THROUGH IT... 00020000057A00005CEE574,the village was on fire The men, women and children of the Ittawa tribe ran in panic as the CAVALRY slashed through their midst. You ran through the chaos, heading for the wooden frame where the Spirit Blanket was hung. Ahead of you, the Shaman grabbed the blanket, but was immediately felled by a bullet. You WHIRLED. Behind you-- the COLONEL REARED HIS HORSE. The flames illuminating the savage gleam in his eyes. His pistol smoking. He AIMED IT RIGHT AT YOU... mike QUICKLY lowers the dream catcher Stunned. Looks around at the remains of the long since destroyed village. He lifts the Dream Catcher for another look. But this time... Nothing happens. He frowns. GEORGE AND BILLY WATCH HIM From over by the truck. BillY SMITH Hes quite... special... isnt he. gEORGE Mike? Well, yeah. Sure. But of course, all foster kids are special to me. I was a foster kid myself, you know. Thats why I want to give back-- make sure kids like Mike get the same chance I got to grow up right, despite their circumstances, you know? Billy Were your parents abducted by aliens too? George chuckles. billy SMITH He really seems to believe that, you know. George Yeah, well-- Who am I to argue with THAT? I mean, if its true-- Imagine the money he could make selling the story! (off her squint) You know... when he grows up, I mean. (sees shes not impressed with that answer either) 00020000044D00006262447,Look. Foster kids... they dont exactly live idyllic childhoods, you know? Its not unusual for some of them to... invent backgrounds theyre happier with. Sometimes they even believe em too. Billy looks back toward the ruins where Mike is now shaking, banging, even blowing on the Dreamcatcher. Trying to reboot. the sun is low over the distant mountains. Bathing the valley in glorious shades of purple. And LONG SHADOWS... an idyllic clearing The scouts pitch camp near a stream. George dumps a bag of CHARCOAL BRIQUETTES into a pit. Douses them with lighter fluid. And throws in a match. WHOOOSH. stus inside his tent Clipping his toenails. It looks like hes been inhabiting the place for weeks already. chads tent is big enough for a family of four. Hes inside relaxing on his inflatable furniture. Watching a movie with loud EXPLOSIONS in it on his DVD player. meanwhile, gus is having trouble getting his pup tent to stand up. It keeps toppling to one side or the other as he pulls his lines taut. buTCH (passing by) Drive the stakes in on one side first, stupid. 000200000585000066A957F,guS I knew that. He looks around for a blunt object. Dumps out his pack. Its filled with snackfood. Gus selects a can of spaghetti-os. Its metal. Its flat. Itll do. He crouches down and starts POUNDING on a stake. BANG. BANG. BA-SCHLUNK. SPLORRT. Covering his shoe with tomato sauce and round pasta noodles. butchs tent is covered with spraypainted graffiti. Hes INSIDE unpacking his gear. He looks over his shoulder. Then pulls out a string of firecrackers. Inside Mikes tent The cover of The Restless Tribe glows under Mikes flashlight. Mike stares at it... Agonizing. Mike You dont have to look... Youve got it pretty good now... If you look youll find something... If you find something, youll want to look closer... And if you look closer you KNOW whats gonna happen-- FLASH CUTS: GEORGE: SCREAMING... as he falls into some kind of swirling interdimensional VORTEX-- CHAD: SCREAMING... is just a HEAD in an elaborate life-support JAR. A mad scientist laughing maniacally as he remote controls Chads body, its neck now topped with a small dish antenna. GUS: SCREAMING... up to his neck in a bubbling cauldron. CANNIBAL CLOWNS pounding their forks and knives on the circular table that surrounds the pot. THE STATION WAGON from the Wisconsin Department of Child Welfare pulls up. The SOCIAL WORKER behind the wheel, sighing and shaking his head. BACK in his tent 00020000030A00006C28304,Mike stares at the book. Mike Sorry, George. He flips it open-- slapping through pages as fast as he can. Finally stops on the page where the MURAL IN THE CABIN is reproduced. Sure enough-- Depicted in the painting The COLONEL REARS HIS HORSE. The flames illuminating the savage gleam in his eyes. His pistol smoking. He AIMS IT RIGHT AT YOU... down by the river Gus sits on the bank, unlacing his Spaghetti-Oed sneaker. Dips it in the stream to clean it. It isnt very wide or deep, but the currents moving at a deceptive clip. The sneaker squirts out of Gus hand and bobs into the middle of the river. guS Hey! He splashes in after it. The sneaker TAKES OFF downstream. guS Hey!!! back at camp Mike arrives in front of Gus flattened tent. Looks around. 00020000041400006F2C40E,in the middle of the river Gus splashes after his shoe in the knee-high water. The stream feeds into a WIDER ARTERY which suddenly deepens to his waist. He pitches face forward with a SPLASH. Then bobs to the surface, gasping and treading water. The current carries him thrashing DOWNSTREAM... He disappears AROUND A BEND. back at camp Mike unclips his walkie talkie. mIKE Gus? Can you hear me? Gus? He starts looking around. Spots Gus FOOTPRINT outlined in Spaghetti-Os. And another one. Two points form a line. Mike starts in the direction indicated. Toward the sound of RUNNING WATER... the footprints vanish at the edge of the stream. Into the water. Mike looks around. Focuses his stare downstream. He frowns. mIKE GUS! No answer. Mike turns and runs back toward the camp. george opens the microwave hes placed on a stump, hooked up to a portable generator. gEORGE Whatta you mean hes lost? He throws in a Wolfgang Puck frozen pizza and sets the timer. mIKE His footprints go down to the river and disappear. 0002000003D00000733A3CA,gEORGE So grab a couple of the guys and go look for him. PFFFFT! He pops open a beer. Mike just stands there. gEORGE What? You guys are Scouts, right? So go on... scout. running single file Mike, Dexter and Stu jog down the bank of the narrow stream. Leaping and ducking over stones and under branches. Theyre very small in the vastness of the forest... the three boys have arrived at the spot where the stream feeds into the wider river. Gasping for breath. Mike points downriver. Mike Whats that? sTU (squints) I dont see anything. Mike runs. Dexter and Stu follow him. gus sneaker has washed onto the bank. Mike picks it up. He looks ashen. deXTER (getting nervous) Maybe its not his. Stu I wish you werent too big to call stupid. Dexter Yeah, well I am. So... Mike just stares downriver. Sloshes onward. the sun vanishes over the mountaintops. Tiny FLASHLIGHT beams search the forest below. dEXTER So when exactly do bears like to feed, Stu? 0002000003350000770432F,sTU Man, shut up about bears. dEXTER This sucks. What if we dont find him? Mike Well find him. dEXTER Yeah. But what if we dont? Mike Quiet, I hear something. The boys freeze. Beacons sweeping off tree trunks. sTU I dont hear anything. Mike Quiet. Not only do the scouts get quiet, but... one by one, EVERY SINGLE SOUND in the forest CEASES. Then something RUSTLES. sTU Oh my God! Its a BEAR!! Mike Dont move! A bear wont chase you if you dont move! sTU Thats cuz it wont have to! Something BIG and BLACK CRASHES out of the woods. sTU AAAAAAAAAH!!! dexter and Mike AAAAAAAAAAAAHHH!!! Big and black are relative terms of course. GUS AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH!!! Mike Gus! guS AAAAAAaaa... H- hi... His teeth are chattering. Dexter bursts into SOBS of relief. Stus head pops out of the water. 00020000064E00007A33648,Mike Youre covered with mud! What happened? guS (points) I was washing my shoe and I lost it and it went down the river. So I was chasing it and I fell and all of a sudden the river got bigger but then it got smaller and I got out. Stu climbs out of the stream, soaked. Looks at Dexter, sobbing like Baby Huey. stu What are you-- crying? Dexter just shoves him back in the water. SPLASH. guS -- and I found something. mIKE What. Gus opens his shirt. Hes wearing an elaborate BEAR CLAW NECKLACE. Mikes jaw drops open. mIKE This is old. Really old. And it belonged to someone big. Like a Chief or Warrior. Whered you find this? sTU Who cares. Lets get back. Im hungry. mIKE Stu. Something this valuable wouldntve been left just lying around... It wouldve been... buried. Dexter and Gus exchange intrigued looks. They glance at Stu. sTU Goodbye. mIKE Okay. See ya. He starts off downstream, Gus and Dexter following him. Leaving Stu... all alone... in the dark. mIKES VOICE Remember... a bear wont chase you if you dont run! Stu grits his teeth. Splashes after them. walking in the dark Gus leads the search party as they hustle down the river bank. Mike regales them all with a story. mIKE The Ittawas had a ritual about birth and death. When you were born, the tribes Shaman would take a tiny gourd and fill it with water. The gourd represented your body. And the water represented your soul. sTU My soul would be represented by chocolate milk. mIKE All the gourds from all the people in the tribe were attached together into something they called the Spirit Blanket. 0002000003570000807B351,A flash of LIGHTNING. Followed a few seconds later by a rumble of THUNDER. The big kid, Dexter looks worried. mIKE When you died, they removed your gourd from the Spirit Blanket and emptied it. And your life force would be free to go back to the Great Spirit. deXTER Nice fairy tale. Whats it got to do with us? mIKE Okay... Its 1868 and the tribes been decimated in a bloody massacre. The Spirit Blanket is destroyed when the village burns down. The few survivors bury their dead, and are sent to a reservation. More LIGHTNING and THUNDER. CLOSER this time. MIKE Generations later... some of the Ittawas return to their ancestral home, you know, to see where they came from. Only, when they try to find the tribes burial mound, its not there. Its gone. All the scouts stop dead in their tracks. sTU Whatta you mean its gone? 0002000003C4000083CC3BE,mIKE Theres no evidence that anybody, much less hundreds of bodies were ever buried anywhere. The Ittawas believe that, because their relatives souls were never freed from the Spirit Blanket, the dead became restless, and simply walked away. deXTER Walked away... where? mIKE (whispers) Nobody knows... but some say, theyre still out here. In the woods. Searching... Stu, Dexter and Gus all look around the DARK WOODS. Then they look at each other. They SCREAM. stu, dexter & gus AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!! Then they all start cracking up. sTU That is so cool! mIKE But its not what really happened. The other boys are eating out of his hands at this point. Mike gets down on one knee and scoops up a handful of dirt. mIKE Look at this. The soil here is sandy clay. Its soft. Loose. He stands up and points at the nearby hillsides. mIKE The trees on these hills look around 130 years old. The rainfall in this area is 12.4 inches per year. 0002000003670000878A361,He starts walking. The boys follow. MIKE When the cavalry burned the village, it started a forest fire. Everything around here burned to the ground. (looking around) You found the necklace around here, didnt you, Gus? The tiny kid sweeps the area with his flashlight. guS I think... mIKE Without the trees supporting the topsoil on those slopes on top of the bluff, thered be mudslides here every year till the growth came back. The Restless Tribe didnt get up and walk away. Theyre right where theyve always been. At the base of these hills. The mud just leveled out the ground around the burial mound. In fact, theres a very good chance... we could be standing right on top of it. The GROUND COLLAPSES under his feet. Mike disappears. The others GASP and run forward to where he stood. The GROUND COLLAPSES under their feet too. They SCREAM. 00020000035A00008AEB354,they fall into a trench formed by the COLLAPSING EARTH. Dexter, Stu and Gus pile into Mike at the bottom. Panicked and adrenalized. SCREAMING. Then LAUGHING as they find themselves unhurt. Mikes mini FLASHLIGHT BEAM scans the area. ILLUMINATING a HALF UNCOVERED SKELETON in the wall of the trench right behind Stus head. The boys stop laughing as the color drains from their faces. Stu whips around. FREAKS. they scramble out of the trench SCREAMING. And run headfirst into THREE FIGURES, LOOMING over the trench in the dark. A flash of LIGHTNING. gEORGE I was getting worried about you boys. A roar of THUNDER. Chad and Butch stand behind the scoutmaster. Shining their FLASHLIGHTS into the trench. gEORGE Its a good thing we decided to go looking for you. mIKE George, we found it! We found the burial mound! We have to tell Billy! 00020000039100008E3F38B,gEORGE What do you mean we, paleface? Mike What? George Finders keepers, right, fellas? mIKE What... whatre you talking about, George? gEORGE Indians buried their dead with their belongings, didnt they, Mike? mIKE Yeah... gEORGE Well, do you have any idea how much rare Indian artifacts sell for on the open market? We just struck the mother lode! Chad and Butch WHOOP and leap into the trench. Wielding shovels. gEORGE Dig it up, boys! Bonus for whoever gets the most stuff! Stu leaps back into the trench after the other two boys. sTU YEAH! dEXTER Oh man, thats whack! You guys arent gonna dig up a cemetery! gEORGE What cemetery? You see any headstones? This is archaeology! CRACK! A bolt of LIGHTNING tears open the sky. Letting out the rain. Mike stares in disbelief as Chad, Butch and Stu tear at the exposed side of the burial mound. Illuminated by sporadic FLASHES of lightning. 00020000034D000091CA347,Dexter turns and runs back up the path. Gus staring after him, looks down at the BEAR CLAW NECKLACE dangling from his neck. He drops it on the ground. guS Dex! Wait for me! He runs after Dexter. The rain pours down. Mike stands there, unable to run. Barely able to speak. mIKE George, stop. You cant do this. gEORGE I cant? Why not? mIKE Because its sacred ground. gEORGE To WHO?? Mike The Ittawas! gEORGE Somehow, I dont think theyll miss it. People tend to get a little less possessive about their stuff when theyre dead. CRACK. BOOM. Lightning strikes. Very close. George picks up the bear claw necklace that Gus dropped. Puts it on. Turns for the trench. mIKE Ill tell. gEORGE (turns back) Tell who, Mike? These shores will swarm with the invisible dead of my tribe... And when your childrens children think themselves alone in the silence of the pathless woods, they will not be alone... The White Man will never be alone. Let him be just and kindly with my people, for the dead are not powerless. Dead, did I say? There is no death... Only a change of worlds... Even the crickets are listening now... Gus Who said that? Dexter Mike did. I totally saw his lips move. MIke Chief Seattle said that... right after they took away his land... Stu We didnt take any land. We just... moved some of it around a little! dexter Okay... so... seriously, McClain. Who did this? They round a corner. Makes a run for Chad. Leaving the other scouts stacked like dominoes in their effort to peek around the corner. STU Then who is it?? tied to the stake Chads eyes widen as Mike comes running up. Craning to look back over his shoulder. Mike Chad! You alright? Im getting you out of here! He gets behind Chad and cuts loose his hands. cHAD Mmm mmmm! mIKE Stop wriggling! Youre making this harder! They turn left and sprint up the highway. INDIAN SKELETONS pour out of the woods onto the pavement AHEAD OF THEM. The scouts slam on the brakes. Eyes like saucers. They veer to the right. INTO THE TREES. The warriors clatter after them. Mike dashes after his companions toward the sandstone fissure, but his escape is CUT OFF by a fast moving phalanx of the dead. He turns. Another skeleton is RIGHT NEXT TO HIM. It SCREAMS and lunges. Mike ducks and runs back the way he came. 0002000003820000E66037C,chase him as numerous warriors get in his path like skeletal linebackers. Mike leaps, darts, feints, pivots and even straight-arms his way through. Heading INTO THE WOODS. Slowly CLOSE IN on him now that hes running more or less in a straight line. Closer. CLOSER... Skeletal hands REACH for him-- Gus DROPS HIS PACK and picks up an extra high gear. The two skeletons closest to him STUMBLE over the discarded load and BREAK APART, bones flying. Fueled by fear, the now unencumbered Gus leaves the predators in his dust. Apparently UNHARMED. He vanishes into the thick brush like Brer Rabbit into a briar patch. His remaining pursuers stop and gather around his backpack. Still OOZING RED from where the arrow protrudes. They stare at it curiously through their barren eye sockets. One of them opens the pack, looks inside, then reaches in. Tugging the arrow all the way through. And coming out with: 0002000003A20000EF9039C,A leaking can of SPAGHETTI-Os. Mike fixes his position on his handheld GPS locator. Briefly flicks on his mini-maglite to consult with his folding map. He looks around. Then picks up his walkie talkie. chad in the tree Watches the last of the skeletons disappear into the woods. He heaves a SIGH of relief. His WALKIE TALKIE SQUAWKS. MikeS VOICE Guys..? Anybody? It LEAPS ten feet up onto the trunk of the tree. Starts shimmying up. Chad YELPS and reaches for the NEXT BRANCH UP. Starts climbing. The skeleton lunges up the tree after him like some kind of macabre squirrel. Its gaining on him. RAPIDLY. Chad looks back over his shoulder. SHRIEKS. And tries to climb faster. The skeleton reaches up and GRABS CHADS ANKLE. Chad SCREAMS and GRABS A BRANCH in both arms. Trying to kick free. The skeleton starts climbing his leg. Chad grabs and undoes his BELT BUCKLE. Man, skeletons are good tree climbers! Chad looks up. In another 20 feet, hes run out of tree. He whimpers LOUDER. Then pulls the tomahawk out of the tree and starts chopping the tree trunk in front of his face. The two dead braves keep climbing. Woods chips raining into their empty eye sockets. Chad chopping, looks down. SCREAMS and throws the tomahawk. CHUNK! The weapon embeds in a skull. But the warrior KEEPS COMING. Chad starts climbing again. Start crawling across to the plateau. pinned under the branches Chad fights to lift the broken tree off of him. Not even on his best day. Through the branches, he sees the two nightmare figures arrive on top of him. The one with the tomahawk in its face grabs it and pulls it out. Leering down at him. crack!!! The last vestige of wood holding the angled tree together SNAPS at the break. The broken part FALLS AWAY... 0002000004CF00011E624C9,swinging like a fulcrum where the tree meets the edge of the cliff... and flinging the two skeletons toward the horizon like so much catapult ammo. The rest of the broken treetop slides off the edge of the plateau... Leaving Chad flat on his back on top of the bluff. Stunned. Scratched. Pantsless. But intact. the army of the dead creep through the trees in the dark, dark night. Incoming! SMASH! A skeletal missile flies into their midst and SHATTERS on impact. The dead Ittawa spook and run. The place is completely TRASHED. mIKE See a telephone anyplace? Chad looks around, picks up an antique, U.S. Cavalry sabre off the floor. Takes a few practice swipes with it. Notices the wall-sized mural. Stares at it. Mike looks in the kitchen Its even more totaled than the living room. An absolute disaster area. The boys look at each other, move on. Chads voice You wouldnt think Billy Smith would have anything the Ittawa would want back-- What the heck would they be looking for here? THE PANTRY door swings open. A SKELETAL HAND gropes out... mike turns on the light in the bedroom. Chad follows him in. Unlike the rest of the house, the room is intact. Mike spots the telephone on the nightstand. Picks up the receiver. Something goes BUMP inside the closet. Mike stares at the closet, looks at Chad, sets the phone down. He goes to the closet, puts his hand on the knob. Gestures for Chad to come forward with the sword. Holds up 3 fingers. Then counts down. 3... 2... 1. Chad raises the sword. Mike OPENS THE DOOR, exposing-- A double barreled SHOTGUN. Somehow, when the guys started digging up their graves, or maybe when they looted their belongings, it activated some kind of supernatural trigger. The dead came back to life. Only... theres not that much left of them now. Just bones and weapons, mostly. Billy just blinks. bILLY SMITH Mike... now you know, I mean you really know that, there are no skeletons. Right? Anymore than your folks were really abducted by saucermen. Okay? Youre just making this stuff up. 00020000033D00015E85337,mIKE No, Im afraid not. bILLY SMITH Mike. mIKE You said yourself, Billy. One chased you over here. bILLY SMITH I said something chased me. I didnt say a SKELETON chased me. Okay? Theres a big difference. Actually, what chased me looked more like some kind of giant bunny rabbit. mIKE Long eared or flop eared? BILLY SMITH Okay. I admit that sounds kinda weird too. But its not a skeleton. There are no skeletons. Somebody, or someTHING clears its throat from the doorway. Billy looks and practically swallows her tongue. standing in the doorway is a SKELETON IN A MOLDY HOUSEDRESS. About 4 feet tall and hunchbacked. With long, scraggly white hair and dirt encrusted, coke bottle lensed glasses. skeleton in a housedress Anybody got a cigarette? Voguing in the mirror. nana clomps out into the living room on her way to the kitchen. Billy and Mike following. nANA You kids want some tea? Im gonna make tea. Dont think I got any biscuits, though. Billy, essentially numb now, merely frowns at the atomic level of destruction in the living room. bILLY SMITH What happened in here? nANA I told ya. I was looking for a cigarette. She starts to rattle around in the kitchen. Billy turns to meet Mikes gaze. Shes looking very pale. bILLY SMITH There really are saucermen, arent there. Mike solemnly nods. bILLY SMITH Im just going to get some air. She opens the front door. Billy turns to Mike. bILLY SMITH Or maybe Ill just make a nice fire. She wanders off. Mike stares at the thing on the porch. mIKE George??? Its GEORGE ALRIGHT. His arms bound, his mouth gagged. Dressed up in stitched together animal skins thatve been slathered with some kind of luminous whitewash. He runs inside, his EYES BULGING in fear. Literally hopping up and down with adrenalin. Chad emerges from the bedroom. Still trying to clear the RINGING in his ears. He sees George, SCREAMS. mIKE No, Chad! Its alright! Its just George, dressed like a big rabbit! (looks at George) You are supposed to be a rabbit, right? gEORGE Nnnnng! nanas voice (from the kitchen) Did you say rabbit? My mama once told me a story about rabbits. No, what theyd do is, theyd follow it, all the way back to its warren. Then- WHAMMO! Theyd clobber the whole bunch of em! 00020000034900016CBD343,Mike listening, looks sideways at George, then out the open front door... dozens of warrior skeletons charge from the woods-- Their leader already leaping UP THE FRONT PORCH-- mike closes the door A loud CRASH on the other side as bone hits wood. He turns to the others. Mike Were gonna need more tea. CRASH!! A TOMAHAWK flies through a window and buries itself in the wall near Billy-- severing the flaming tip from her fireplace match. It falls TO THE FLOOR, still LIT... MikE Barricade the windows!! Run!! CRASH!!! All the OTHER WINDOWS EXPLODE. ARROWS WHOOSHING and THUNKING in all directions. Narrowly missing everyone. nana emerges from the kitchen carrying a TEA SET. CRASH! An arrow shatters the teapot and embeds in her chest. She GASPS. Then GLARES OUT THE WINDOW. Nana HEY! Im trying to entertain in here! 0002000007320001700072C,FUNTCH-FUNTCH-FUNTCH!! Three more arrows thunk into her. Raising dust. Nana Okay. Fine. She slams down the tea tray. chad upends the bed and SHOVES it in front of the bedroom window. A Skeletal arm THRUSTS through the crack, wielding a knife. WHACK! Chad CHOPS it off with his sabre. a skeleton raises a window in the KITCHEN, starts to crawl though. BANG! Billy slams the window shut, cutting the thing in half. Its torso SPRINGS at her. Billy SHRIEKS and leaps away. meanwhile, mike struggles to block the back door with a chair. WHOOOSH-- a FLAMING ARROW streaks across the room. Mikes head spins, following its trajectory. THUNK! It embeds in one of Nanas paintings in the living room, setting it ABLAZE. Mike runs after it. george is jumping up and down in the middle of the room, knocking over the plastic bottle of LIGHTER FLUID. It points across the wooden floor toward the LIT END of the severed FIREPLACE MATCH... nana clomps past Glaring out the front window. She raises her DOUBLE-BARRELLED SHOTGUN. BLAM! BLAM! Vaporizing a pair on her front porch. Behind her, the skeleton torso scrambles across the floor, trying to get away from Billy, whos beating it with a broom. Mike pulls the fire arrow from the burning painting and stomps out the flame. Suddenly... he STARES at the charred canvas. Its a nightmare image of THE COLONEL ON HORSEBACK WITH AN ARROW THROUGH HIS CHEST. NANA IS RELOADING the shotgun. THUMP! An arrow pins her arm to her side. She shakes her fist out the window. Nana Dont think I dont recognize you kids without your skins! 10 MORE ARROWS turn into a skeletal PORCUPINE. Nana ACK!!! Your mothers are gonna hear about this in the afterlife! An ARMOIRE SLIDES BETWEEN HER AND THE WINDOW-- Chad and Billy pushing it-- Nana Hey! Chad WHAT?? WHO CARES WHAT ORDER THEYRE IN! Nana (pulling out arrows) Theyre just bad dreams! There isnt any order! Mike Yes there is! He points to the HUGE MURAL of the beginning of the massacre-- Mike That ones first! (moves a few more) These go like this... (grabs up a last painting) And this-- He places the VIEW OF THE FISSURE IN THE HIGH BURNING BLUFF at the end of the line. Mike Goes here... (to Nana) Is this how you remember it? K-CHOP- CHOP- CHOP- CHOP- CHOP!!! Billy SMITH (beating the torso) Mike! NANA I just painted what I saw in the Dream Catcher whenever I walked in the woods... I thought if I looked long enough... I just saw that face in the Dream Catcher-- Mike 00020000045E00017C30458,-- Which your father made to protect you from nightmares! But for some reason, it caught something even worse than nightmares! He starts tearing through the dozens of other paintings-- Tossing them to and fro, in search of something particular-- Mike These images... Your paintings... Theyre what your father saw during the massacre! But why would the Dream Catcher he made to protect you-- record his last moments unless he wanted you to see them? There mustve been a reason he wanted you to see them! He finds the painting hes looking for. mIKE And here it is. He holds it up for the others to see. Its THE VIEW FROM THE FISSURE IN THE BLUFF OF THE VILLAGE FAR BELOW-- SURROUNDED BY FIRE. Mike Whats wrong with this picture?? Everyone stares at it. Shaking their heads. K-CHOP- CHOP- CHOP- CHOP- CHOP!!! Splinters are flying off the inside of the log cabin walls. Mike points to the center of the village-- And walks forward with the painting-- CLOSER... CLOSER... It was burned up in the fire! Mike If the Spirit Blanket was destroyed in the fire, the spirits in the gourds would have been destroyed too! Its a simple equation, Chad! If the tribes spirits are still out there, then the Spirit Blanket is still out there too! Chad blinks. CHOPPING Tomahawk blades now penetrating. cHAD You are so not thinking what I think youre thinking! Mike Chad, we can bring back all the artifacts you guys dug up and it still wont give the tribe any peace. The only way to do that, is to find the Spirit Blanket, and release the spirits..! cHAD Oh man! You were thinking it! Billy stops beating the pile of bone fragments that was the torso. A flicker of hope in her eyes. mIKE Its the only thing that makes sense. nANA But... where did he go? mIKE Same place were going. 0002000003CB000184D83C5,He points at the painting of THE FISSURE IN THE BURNING BLUFF. MIKE There. Its at that moment that the others notice something. Chad Hey... The chopping stopped... Indeed. In fact... its TOTALLY QUIET. They all turn tight little circles, trying to listen. Billy nearly trips over the LIGHTER FLUID BOTTLE. Picks it up. In the silence she notices the STILL BURNING MATCH on the floor in front of the fireplace. About to flicker out... bILLY SMITH Why would they stop trying to get in through the walls... cHAD Unless they found... mike, BILLY, AND CHAD -- AN EASIER WAY IN! KA-SHKLUNK!!! A SKELETON WARRIOR lands in the fireplace! BILLY, STARTLED-- CRUSHES the LIGHTER FLUID BOTTLE IN HER HANDS-- SPWOOSH!!! It SPRAYS. OUTSIDE, more dead ittawa are sneaking up to the cabin. Suddenly... POOMF!!! FLAME AND FEATHERS blast out of the chimney. WHAM!!! The front door flies open. The FLAMING, SCREAMING, SKELETAL WARRIOR running right at them! 0002000002A70001889D2A1,The other braves SHRIEK and run for the woods-- Their blazing brother hot on their trail, EMBERS FLYING.. FRAMED IN THE CABINS DOORWAY Mike, Billy, Chad, and George the Rabbit gape at the departing horror. Nana sticks her skull out from inside. Nana He looked like an old flame of mine. Mike Now might be a good time to run. Nana Why run? I got a Pontiac in the shed! They look at her. Something shiny jingles from her phalanges. Nana Found my keys! they run for the shed Mike suddenly stops and looks back at the others. mIKE You dont all have to come! The Spirit Borders right over there! You can wait on the other side and the skeletons cant touch you! 00020000038A00018B3E384,Chad and George immediately make a dash for the Spirit Border, Mike and Billy for the shed. bILLY SMITH (looks back) Wait! Wheres Nana? Nana clomps across the property as fast as she can, which is, not very fast. Mike takes her by the hand. mIKE Cmon, Nana. We have to go now..! Nana smacks him with her cane. nANA Take your hands off me! What do I look- helpless? Inching along, pulling arrows out of her body. Mike anxiously at her side. across the spirit border Chad and George raise their heads just high enough to peer over a bush. Their eyes widen. An Indian skeleton charges from the woods toward Mike, Billy and Nana. gEORGE NNNNNNNNNNG!!! Chad bolts from the bushes. Back across the Spirit Border. mike and billy look up as the warrior closes in on them. Swinging a tomahawk. SMASH! Chad jumps in front and cleaves it with his sabre. cHAD Nobody messes with Microscope but me! 0002000003A700018EC23A1,Mike and Billy look at him gratefully. Chad scoops Nana up and starts to run for the shed. Nana BEATS him with her cane. nANA Put me down! Im not that kind of girl! Behind them, the skeleton starts to REFORM... the shed is a long, weather beaten hand-made structure. Mike throws open the big door in front. The rusting remains of a 1939 Pontiac Deluxe 8 convertible sits on four flat whitewalls. Billy deflates like a leaky rubber raft. bILLY SMITH Will this thing even start? mIKE Try! Billy tries to open the door. Cant. Finally just clambers into the open convertible. nANA Move over. Nobody drives my car but me. Billy slides across the bench seat. Chad dumps the dead old lady behind the wheel. Nanas bony fingers insert the key in the ignition. Turn it. No response. nANA Thats funny. I just filled it up yesterday. Billy smacks herself on the forehead. Shes definitely lost control of her evening. 0002000003BA000192633B4,Mike pops open the hood. The car is MISSING ITS ENGINE. Instead, a FERAL CAT feeds a litter of kittens in the empty bay. Startled, they scat. george skids up Still bound and gagged. Jumping up and down with fear. He dives head first into the vehicles backseat. Dozens of voices ULULATE from the woods. The war party regrouping. Mike turns and stares into the distance. cHAD Theyre coming! mIKE (realizing) Its all downhill... (excited) Its all downhill! Chad! Help me push! The two foster brothers run around to the back of the vehicle. Lean into it. The flivver starts to roll. Nana grips the wheel with both hands, barely able to peer over the dash. naNA Ah! I got her started, kids! clear of the shed the jalopy tilts down the hill and starts to pick up speed. Mike and Chad run after it. Leap onto the running boards. Nana sticks out her arm, signaling a left turn. The car starts to loop around the 180 degree drive. 0002000003920001961738C,the skeleton chad shattered fully REFORMS and stands up. Turns around with an evil HISS. WHAM! The Pontiac swerves out of the dark and FLATTENS it. riding in the convertible Billy looks back in horror. Then faces front, warmed by an ORANGE GLOW... ahead of them The WOODS AND THE ROAD ARE A WALL OF FLAME. nANA Well, thats inconvenient. Looks like were gonna have to take the Back road. bILLY SMITH (not the Back road!) The Back road??? mIKE Whats the Back road? Nana suddenly SWERVES toward the WOODEN SAWHORSE that blocks-- the back road CRASH!!! The Pontiac plows through the sawhorse. Low hanging branches start SMACKING against Mike and Chad, threatening to knock them off the vehicles running boards. cHAD Ow! Hey! bILLY SMITH Lights! Nana! Turn on your lights! Nana reaches for the knob. It COMES OFF IN HER HAND. nANA Darn it. Why does this always happen after the warranty runs out? 000200000456000199A3450,Mike unclips his mini-maglite. Shines the meager beam ahead of them. the road ahead is narrow, pitted with pot holes and riddled with hairpin turns that butt up against sheer drops into vast chasms. George chooses this moment to raise his head. gEORGE NNNNNNNNNNG!!! Billy startled, looks back at him. Pulls loose his GAG. gEORGE AAAAAAAH!!! WERE GONNA DIE!!! Nana spins the wheel. the pontiac takes the first turn dangerously fast. Tilting on 2 wheels like a catamaran. Chad on the right side running board, HANGS OVER THE EDGE of a 200 foot sheer drop. He SCREEEEEAMS! BANG! The car drops down on all fours again. Going FASTER. mIKE Nana! Slow down! nANA I cant! I dont have any brakes! bILLY SMITH What??? The four flat tires CHATTER over a bone-jarring series of potholes. SHREDDING any last vestiges of rubber. The occupants of the vehicle bounce like Mexican jumping beans. Here comes ANOTHER TURN... cHAD NOOOOOOO!!! errrrrrrrrrk! The car lists over EVEN FURTHER on its outside wheels. Chads feet slip off the running board. DANGLING in mid-air over the side of the cliff. 00020000062C00019DF3626,BANG! It drops back down on four wheels. The violent impact sends George AIRBORNE out of the backseat. He lands on his back on the trunk, his feet, still in the backseat the only things keeping him from falling off the car. The others would help him, only theyve all got their hands full just trying to stay in the careening auto themselves. cHAD At least we got away from the skeletons! BWANG! The front hood flies off the car into the night. Two BONY FEET sticking out from the engine compartment. The SKELETON THEY RAN OVER in front of the shed SPRINGS OUT, fully reassembled. Straddling the open compartment, wielding his WAR CLUB. He lets rip an ear piercing SHRIEK. BAM! The car hits a vicious POTHOLE, sending the warrior AIRBORNE. It LANDS ON TOP OF GEORGE on the trunk of the car. gEORGE AAAAAAAAAAAAA!!! mike and chad AAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!! Chad still holding the sabre, SLASHES at the thing. Severing an arm, which goes flying. Unfortunately, the braves other arm is holding its TOMAHAWK. It hisses and swings at Chad. The boy leans out of the way. The weapon WHOOSHES past his nose. Chad slashes and the skeleton ducks. The skeleton swings and Chad leans. Slash duck swing lean. Slash duck swing lean. George on his back on the trunk of the car with the skeleton ON TOP OF HIM, manages to SIT UP. Pitching the warrior off him just as Chad takes a vicious swipe with the sabre. SLASH! Georges pseudo bunny ears lift off THE TOP OF his head and blow away. Billy SCREAMS in the front seat. The one armed skeleton now in her lap. HISSES at her. 0002000006200001A41961A,nANA Hold onto your hats! She CRANKS THE WHEEL. the pontiac rockets into the hairiest hairpin yet. The inside wheels lift off the road. The car practically tilts sideways. Chad hangs over the edge by his hands. George upside down, by his feet. The skeleton spills off Billys lap and tumbles out into space. The Pontiac threatens to follow. Teetering on the brink of no return... everyone Whoaaaaaaaaaa..! BANG! The vehicle drops back down and keeps going. Nana fights the wheel as the ancient Pontiac veers left toward the sheer side of the mountain. Mikes eyes widen. He leaps off the left side running board into the backseat as the flivver SCRAPES against the sandstone wall. Sheering off both left side fenders and running board. bILLY SMITH Oh my God! Mike! We lost Mike! Mike raises his head out of the backseat. mIKE No! Im right here! nANA What happened to my lights? Mike realizes his FLASHLIGHT is rolling around on the floor in the back of the car. He gropes for it. GRABS it. Shines it ahead of them. illuminating a sign that reads: DANGER - BRIDGE CONDEMNED. mikes eyes widen He throws Chad the flashlight. mIKE Chad! Trade ya! Grabbing Chads sabre, he drives it straight down through the floorboards. SHUNK! under the car The blade digs and drags in the pitted dirt road. Scattering loose rocks and gravel. up ahead The CONDEMNED BRIDGE looms. An ancient construct of rotting wooden planks held together by sheer force of habit alone. the passengers in the car dont like what they see. They voice their displeasure. 0002000004D50001AA334CF,passengers AAAAAAAAAAAAA!!! sparks fly from the sabre blade dragging under the car. the pontiac slows Approaching the bridge. The wheels, sans rubber, roll onto the planks. Coming to a COMPLETE STOP. dead center on the bridge Suspended over BLACKNESS. Aged timbers GROANING and CREAKING. Crickets CHIRP. The passengers sit in the car. Afraid to move. Afraid even to breathe. A loud, sickening CRACK! Their collective SCREAM FADES as bridge, car and passengers PLUMMET from sight. splash! Landing ON TOP OF THE RIVER. Everyone still in their places in the car. The severed section of bridge below them serving as a raft. Nana still cranking the steering wheel, looks back at Mike. nANA So... where to? Mike leans forward and smiles. mIKE Steady as she goes, Helmsman. He meets Billys gaze. mIKE The river knows the way. He sits back. Reaches into his pack. Pulls out another apple. CRUNCH. FURTHER DOWNSTREAM - billys dogs bark Hovering possessively around a few choice bones. Keeping 3 PARTIALLY ASSEMBLED SKELETONS at bay. Gus huddles behind the hounds for protection. guS Go away! Go away! One of the dogs starts to dig a hole. Drops in his souvenirs. Gus glances toward the river, does a double-take. 0002000006A10001AF0269B,the pontiac floats around the bend on top of the raft. Nana cranking the wheel as she peers over the dash. Mike, Billy, Chad and George all staring at him with their mouths hanging open. mIKE Gus! Get in! Gus wades into the shallow river and splashes over to the raft. Each of the hounds grabs a bone and dog paddle after him. Mike and Chad help Gus aboard. He glares at Billy. guS Youre late! nANA We had car trouble. Gus blinks at the skeletal chauffeur. bILLY SMITH Gus... Id like you to meet my great, great grandmother. guS Hello. nANA Got a cigarette? gus Uh uh. He shudders, turns and stares at Chad standing there with no pants. And then at George sitting on one of the cars fenders in the weird bunny suit. He blinks and turns back around. George heaves a deep sigh, bends over to put his face in his hands. A patch of scalp rolls off the top of his head and falls to his feet like a dead animal. Dead warriors dance Around the roaring BONFIRE in the center of the Ittawa village. Behind them, the HORIZON IS ORANGE from the approaching forest fire. Tied to stakes Butch, Dexter and Stu are uncomfortably close to the bonfire. Butch stares down a skeletal warrior. BuTCH Hey, Bone-Daddy! I think this side is done! You can turn me now! The skeletal warrior SCREAMS in his face. THE RIVER CANYON Echoes with a CRY OF AGONY. ONBOARD THE CAR/BRIDGE/RAFT Billy, Chad and Gus stare at something in horror. Gus It looks... crooked. Billy winces as her hands adjust the position of Georges re-applied scalp PATCH. He YELPS and swats her hands away-- George Forget it! Ill do it myself! (gingerly spinning his scalp clockwise) Florence Nightingale you are NOT! 00020000066E0001B59D668,(glares at Nana) You got any Bunjee cords in this heap? Nana Might be some tire chains in the trunk. George climbs out of the car-- Leaving the others to look forward. Mike stands at the bow of the raft. Silhouetted by fire reflected in the water ahead. The top of the bluff beyond fully engulfed in flame. Mike stares up at it. Searching. Finally spots-- HIGH UP THE STEEP FACE OF THE BLUFF-- A dark forbidding seam in the rock... THE FISSURE. Mike Were here. THE GROUP SPLASHES ASHORE FROM THE BEACHED RAFT-- Carrying Nana between them. They set her down. Stare up at the climb that awaits them. Georges head is now wrapped with tire chains. George Look. Were miles from any skeletons at this point. (glances at Nana) Present company notwithstanding-- Why dont we just keep on moving downstream toward better things like safety, warmth, the National Guard-- Mike -- Because it would be wrong, George. George AND? Whats your point? Mike Theres a cave up there that holds the key to making things right in this place where so much wrong has occurred. You can either help us find that key... or Ill make sure you wind up in a place where they throw the key away. George Youd do that... to your own father? mike No. But Id do it to you. (to the others) Ready? Nana I think... Ill wait down here. George Good idea. We wouldnt want you to DIE or anything. Chad Shut up, George. Back-lit by the moon... Nana is not so comical any more... Nana I was just a baby... But in my dreams... I remember my father... He was kind and brave... strong and handsome... I remember him as he was in life. Not... 0002000005FC0001BC055F6,(she looks down at her remains) ...like this. Billy smith Its okay. You can wait for us here. Suddenly, the sound of DISTANT DRUMMING reverberates off the bluff. The group turn as one. Staring downriver. Mike Lets go... They head for the bluff. Gus lags behind with Billys dogs. Gus Dont worry, old bone lady. Spock and Bones will look after you. (turns to the dogs) Stay! (points to Nana) Dont eat! The dogs pant agreeably. Nana pats Gus on the head. He smiles and runs after the others, scrambling up the rocky incline. Nana stares up after them. Then looks off in the direction of the DRUMMING. She embraces herself with bony arms. As if suddenly cold. MIKE ARRIVES AT THE FISSURES ENTRANCE Pulls himself up to full height and stares at the featureless walls that converge in a rock slide 50 feet back. The forest above it, utterly engulfed. The others arrive behind him. See him just standing there. Staring. Chad So?? Where is it? Billy SMITH Mike? George Theres nothing here! Its a dead end! Mike It has to be here. George Why? Why does it have to be? You think just because youre a foster kid, the universe owes you an even break? Lifes a poker game, kid. If you wanna get through it-- Sometimes you gotta know when to fold. Mike is staggered. This is impossible. Chad No. Dont give up now. You can find it. You can find anything. Youre Microscope McClain... Mike meets his gaze. Chad Look closer. Mike blinks, trying to think... Then slowly turns-- REMEMBERING-- 0002000005910001C1FB58B,the village burned in the distance. You turned, and found a narrow passage ending in a rock slide fifty feet back. A giant tree at the top threatened to topple right into the fissure at any second. Colonels voice THERE HE IS!! BLAM! BLAM! BLAM! Craters exploded in the sandstone wall above your head. You saw him below you, your BOW in your hands. You let fly an arrow that slammed into his chest. BLAM! You were blown off your feet onto your back. You stared up the crevasse at the forest above you, ablaze. Burning branches and embers fell down around you. Your head lolled to one side-- -- and you saw the entrance to a CAVE. mikes head is turned in the direction the cave entrance should be. But theres nothing there. His eyes narrow. blam! blam! blam! Wild shots blew craters in the sandstone wall over your head. mike whirls from the memory-- aiming his flashlight to the same spot on the wall above his head. Mike Where are the bullet marks? There should be bullet holes right here! It doesnt make sense!! George I agree! So lets get the hell out of here! We can climb that! He points to the rock slide at the rear of the crevasse. Billy SMITH And escape into the safety of the forest fire? George Theyd never think wed be stupid enough to do it! Gus They dont know you well enough. Mike is staring at something high above the rock slide... The HUGE, ANCIENT TREE STUMP. 00020000029B0001C786295,Mike Thats it!! He drops to where the thick carpet of pine needles at their feet meets the rock wall. Starts digging with his hands. Chad Wait! Whats it?? Mike There was a tree up there! George Yeah, yeah-- and a cave over there and bullet holes up here-- Maybe you want the next crevasse over! Mike (still digging furiously) The reason the trees not up there-- is because it toppled... and fell-- DOWN HERE! Now the others move in to help-- Mikes enthusiasm contagious. Mike 134 years of pine needles and eroded soil built up on top of the tree-- raising the floor of the crevasse just high enough... to hide... (shining his flashlight) This. 0002000003690001CA1B363,The others blink-- stunned. IN THE FLASHLIT SPOT-- Three dirty but obvious BULLET CRATERS. THE GROUPS EYES TURN AS ONE-- Toward the spot further up the fissure where the cave should be. UTTER DARKNESS Muffled sounds of digging... Exertion... Then-- A hint of FLICKERING LIGHT-- diffused by organic mulch-- scooped away-- Desperate hands clear an opening-- Mikes VOICE Flashlight! Okay-- Lower me down-- A BLAZING FLASHLIGHT penetrates the chamber. MIKES FACE appears behind it. The opening just big enough for his head to fit through. He tries to tilt his head to look down-- But theres no place for his jaw to go. Mike I cant see anything-- Pull me up! UP ABOVE The others are bent over around the funnel shaped pit theyve dug, holding Mike by the ankles. They haul him back up. He flops down against the chasm wall. Spits dirt from his mouth. 00020000031C0001CD7E316,Mike I cant maneuver down there. The openings too small. And we cant dig through the tree. Not without tools. Gus Ill go. Everyone looks at Gus. Mike Gus. I know you trust me... But I dont know... whats down there. Gus Ill go. Mike nods, proud of his little brother. FROM DEEP IN THE CAVE BELOW-- The beam of firelight from the opening is obscured. Tiny legs dangling as Gus is lowered by-- THE OTHERS ABOVE-- Playing out a rope made from shirtsleeves, socks, and belts. GUS DESCENDS-- Till his sneakers touch the dusty floor of the cave. He stands small and alone in the gloom, holding his weakening flashlight. He plays the beam along the caves walls, turning slowly in place. Until hes pointing the light right at-- -- YOU. And CLICKETY-CLACK!! Gus SCREAMS! 0002000003380001D094332,UP WITH THE OTHERS-- The last length of rope is suddenly YANKED from the groups unprepared hands. GUS SCREAMS echoing from below! Mike DIVES HEADFIRST into the pit-- The others barely catching his legs in time to prevent him breaking his neck. BillY SMITH NO! MIKE!! (to the others) PULL HIM BACK!!! PULL!! FROM INSIDE THE CAVE-- Mike grabs onto the edges of the opening-- Resisting their efforts-- Mike GUS! GUS!!! GUUUUUUS!!! Dragging himself back to the opening. He literally BIRTHS himself through it with painful contortion and force of will. Landing in a heap at the bottom of the cave. Gus flashlight rolls back and forth in the darkness a few yards away. MIKE Gus? Silence. The flashlight flickers. Only its feeble bulb visible now. Then eerily... it starts to rise. Higher... Higher... 0002000004030001D3C63FD,Mike Gus?? Someone Shhhhhhhhhh... Mikes eyes widen. Suddenly the flashlight tilts up-- LIGHTING-- GUSs wide-eyed face. Gus Theres someone else in here. Aiming his flashlight at the sloping wall of soil and rotten vegetation beneath the cave entrance. The two boys approach, listening... Muffled-- buried-- the sound... of whimpering. Mike gets closer to the dirt and leaves. Putting his ear to the mulch... KLATCH!!! A skeletal HAND snaps out before his eyes. Mike YELPS and leaps back. Billys voice MIKE? Whats happening? Mike Its okay! Were fine! He moves back to where the skeletal hand is flexing, like a butterfly fresh from the chrysalis. Mike swallows, terrified. Starts digging into the mulch. Excavating a skeletal arm. It thrashes. Muffled CRIES OF FEAR from the dirt. Mike snatches the flailing hand of bones in a brother handshake. Holding it still. Squeezing it. The CRIES stop. Mike keeps digging with his free hand till suddenly hes staring in wonder and heartbreak at-- 0002000004470001D7C3441,THE REMAINS OF MOONWATCHERS BODY His jaw broken. One arm shattered beneath his crushed rib cage. His head pinned by the ragged stump of a missing branch. The rest of him flattened beneath the mass of the enormous, blackened tree trunk. Hes hopelessly trapped. Mike Im sorry. I cant get you out. The Spirit Blanket... what did you do with it? Gus He cant understand you. Mike Billy! What was the Indian name for the spirit blanket?? IN THE FISSURE ABOVE Billy crouches low-- Listening. Billy SMITH They called it-- DOWN BELOW-- BILLYs voice Tan-ko-kwa! Moonwatcher freezes, rips his hand from Mikes grasp. Starts straining, scratching feebly at an area of soil a bit lower on the slope. A lumpy area. Just an inch from his reach... Mikes fingers move to the spot. Delicately rake the mulch away... uncovering... a TINY, STOPPERED GOURD-- tied by rotting leather-- to another... and another... three more... 10 more... DOZENS. Mike scoops up the ancient moldering SPIRIT BLANKET. Stares in awe at all the tiny gourds. Each one marked with a tiny pictograph-- 0002000003610001DC0435B,Mike We found it... (he shouts up to the others) WE FOUND IT!! His eyes return to Moonwatcher. The skeletons eye sockets gaze at the Spirit Blanket. His bony hand extends a forefinger... pointing. Mike looks at the indicated place on the web of gourds. Sees the one marked with a tiny boy staring up at a crescent moon. Mike Moonwatcher. A sad little moan from the trapped skeleton. His hand strains to reach. Mike brings the blanket close, till Moonwatchers fingers finally grasp his own gourd. He yanks it-- The rotten leather cord SNAPPING-- freeing it from the others. He stares at it in his hand. Then tries to move his other hand in to help pull the stopper out. Straining. Keening in frustration against fates trap. Suddenly-- Mikes fingers are there. Just short of the gourds stopper. His eyes meet Moonwatchers empty sockets. 0002000003610001DF5F35B,Mike Im sorry... Im so sorry this happened to you. Gus Me too. Moonwatcher stares at them a long moment. Then pushes the gourds stopper into Mikes fingers. A tear slides down Gus cheek. Mike steels himself for whatevers about to happen... Mike Goodbye... He pulls the stopper from the gourd. Slowly... So slowly... Tips it over... Spilling out-- TENDRILS OF LIGHT. up above The EERIE BLUEISH GLOW from the hole causes Billy, Chad, and George to back away in fear... DOWN IN THE CAVE Mike and Gus stare, amazed, as the glowing ether swirls around Moonwatchers bones. Surrounding him in a spectral whirlwind. Which takes on HUMAN FORM. MOONWATCHER AS HE WAS IN LIFE. RADIATING LIGHT enough to illuminate the entire cavern. The young warrior spirit pulls himself free of his body. Stands. Looks at himself. Looks at Mike and Gus. Smiles. 0002000003BA0001E2BA3B4,Then ROCKETS UP THROUGH THE OPENING of the cave-- IN THE FISSURE ABOVE Moonwatchers spirit whirls and corkscrews through the air, flying free. As George and Chad nearly wet their pants, the blazing ghost flies up to hover before Billys face. His spectral hand rising up. Glowing fingertips brushing her cheek. Her eyes fill with tears. Suddenly, Moonwatcher seems to sense something. He turns toward the fissures entrance. Then, with a last loving glance at Billy, he STREAKS AWAY. Arcing downward toward the river. Billy, Chad and George staring after him. Race to the edge and look down. Mike and Gus walk up behind them, push through their rank to gaze in wonder themselves. The light from below suddenly goes NOVA. They shield their eyes and cringe back. A THUNDERCLAP booms through the valley. And a shooting star flies UP to the heavens-- Its light increasing till it WHITES OUT EVERYTHING... THEN FADING-- to REVEAL... 00020000024E0001E66E248,NANA STANDING ALONE At the edge of the river. Gazing up at the stars. The others arrive behind her. BillY SMITH Nana? Nana My father came to me... He was kind and brave... strong and handsome... Just as I remembered him. Nana lowers her gaze... Toward the source of the DRUMMING downriver. Looks back at the scouts. Nana Time for you... to make peace. heading for the raft waiting in the shallows. Billys dogs suddenly plant their feet and start BARKING and GROWLING at the flaming woods. bILLY SMITH Bones! Spock! Come! BARK BARK BARK! Chad turns and glares at Gus-- 0002000006AD0001E8B66A7,cHAD Gus! Knock it off! That was funny like, once. guS What? I didnt do anything! cHAD Right! Then why are the dogs going n-n-n-nAAAAA! He turns white as a ghost. So does everyone else. Because-- SKELETAL SOLDIERS Are riding OUT OF THE FLAMES. The remnants of uniforms rotting on their bones. Arrows and tomahawks protruding from painful-looking places. NANA Run!!! Chad and Mike scoop her up and sprint for the raft, the others following fast. but a pair of dead cavalrymen Splash their horses there first. The group stops and turns. two more mounted skeletons have cut off their retreat. The group bunches in a tight circle. A fifth uniformed skeleton rides up to face them. The SHAFT OF AN ARROW protruding from his sternum. The COLONEL! Glaring at them with empty eye sockets. guS (squeaks) Th-these arent Indians..! Mike Of the 317 people killed in the massacre, 21 were U.S. Soldiers. And of those 21... most were never found. GEORGE But what are they doing here? Their souls arent trapped in the Spirit Blanket! bILLY SMITH They died inside the Spirit Border the same time as the tribe... their spirits are locked to the earth along with my ancestors..! Chad How do you know that??? bILLY SMITH I dont! Mike looks at her. bILLY SMITH Thats just what Id write if this happened in one of my books! Itll have to do, because the time for explanations is over. The Colonel leans forward on his mount. Still encrusted with mud and slime from his long dirtnap. A big, icky BUG crawls out of his nasal cavity as he sizes up the uniformed scouts. Settling his gaze on the pants-less Chad. His voice sounds like something from... well, from beyond the grave basically. 0002000003710001EF5D36B,coLONEL Youre out of uniform, soldier. cHAD (blinks) ... Uh... The Colonel looks at George. coLONEL And you... George salutes. Rattling his tire chains. gEORGE The boy lost his pants in battle sir. And as you can see-- (indicates his bandaged head) -- I was gravely wounded as well. Mike (whispers) George- whatre you doing? gEORGE (whispers back) Hes on our side, Mike! Hes gonna help us beat the Indians! Mike What do you mean beat them? Theyre dead! They got nothing to lose! George grabs the Spirit Blanket from Mike. gEORGE Sir. My men and I have recovered something which should prove useful in your war against the Ittawas-- colONEL -- the tribes Spirit Blanket! Mike You... you know about the Spirit Blanket? COLONEL Yes. I became aware of its existence shortly after my... heroic sacrifice. And Ive been looking for it for a very, very, long time. 0002000003080001F2C8302,Mike What for? Its not gonna do you any good. colonel Perhaps not. But if I have to remain on Earth forever like this... why should those savages be allowed to pass on to their pagan Happy Hunting Ground? Billy pushes to the fore. bILLY SMITH Savages? They were my people. And you murdered them! The Colonel would raise an eyebrow, if he still had one. Instead he raises his mud-encrusted PISTOL. colonel Apparently... not all of them. BLAM! The ancient firearm explodes in his hand. VAPORIZING it up to his humerus. Everyone is STUNNED. Mike uses that moment to GRAB THE SPIRIT BLANKET from George and take off for the woods. colONEL Stop him! Shoot that man! The other four skeletal soldiers eye the Colonels stump. Look dubiously at their guns. colONEL 00020000037E0001F5CA378,Confound it, you cowards! Catch him then! That they can do. The other dead soldiers spur their mounts. Galloping after the fleeing boy scout. Leaving the living to glare at George. gEORGE What?? I have a very serious head injury, here! Mike running Hears the sound of POUNDING HOOVES behind him. Turns just in time to DUCK. SLASH! A dead soldier takes a savage swipe with his sabre as he thunders past. Mike changes direction as the horse and rider arc around for another pass. He skids to a halt. two of the soldiers are in his path. Leaping off their skeletal horses and running toward him.
